Assessing Your Home Insurance Coverage: An Interview with Liz Castrillon of Conquest Insurance

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Conquest Insurance opened its doors to the public in September of 2007, by Javier Restrepo and Liz Castrillon, husband and wife.
Javier was born in Colombia and majored in Economics; he worked in insurance for 10 years when he lived in his home country. He came to the island to work and look for a better future for himself. Liz Castrillon is from New York but lived in Florida for many years. She is a Business Administrator with a concentration in Accounting. She worked in the financial industry in Florida until she moved to South Carolina. She came to the island when she married Javier. They have 1 child from their marriage and Javier has two children from his previous marriage.

Javier and Liz opened Conquest insurance with the vision to help the Hispanic community by providing services in their own language. Their objective is to provide excellent customer service and personalized service to each customer, allowing for a more personal touch.

What are some of the services your company provides?

We provide all property and casualty insurance, which means personal auto, commercial auto, general liability, workers compensation, motorcycle, recreational vehicles, mobile home, homeowners', flood etc. Basically anything that encompasses commercial and personal lines.

Please briefly explain the idea of home insurance to our readers, what it is, why it was created, etc.

Homeowners insurance provides protection against disasters as well as the possessions of the individual, which are denominated as contents. It provides liability coverage if an accident occurs on the property. However, there are different types of protection and some policies have to be purchased separately, such as flood insurance. This policy is not covered under a normal homeowners' policy.

What are the advantages of working with a local agent, rather than a popular online insurance source?

I would have to say our friendliness, excellent customer service, our personalized attention, fast service. We look to accommodate to customer's needs, that is why our hours of operation are from 9:30 to 6pm and on Saturday we are open as well from 10 to 2pm. This allows the people that work to come in and make changes, pay, or request help. We not only help customers with their insurance needs, we also help them with questions about everyday subjects or activities that they may need help in. This includes something as easy as looking up a number on Google for them. This is just something we do to make them understand how important they are to us and that we value their relationship.

What is the deductible and how does the insurer decide on the amount?

The deductible is the amount of money that that the insured pays out of pocket before the insurer pays any monies.

Do most property protection policies include dwelling, other structures, and personal property?

Typically if the home is owner occupied it will have that coverage, but it will change depending on the type of dwelling and if it is secondary or rental home. For example, some condominium Regimes have a policy where it will cover the dwelling and other structures but will not cover personal property, so the homeowner has to have that coverage separately.

What does the personal liability part of my policy cover? Will the insurer pay for medical expenses as well?

Personal liability will protect you if someone is injured when in your property. It will cover any damages to them. Medical payment is under the policy and the insurer will pay the coverage amount limited per person and per accident.

Do you have anymore tips for someone who is out their home insurance policy?

Make sure that the Replacement cost value is accurate. When renewing review the policy limits and make sure they are still accurate. Alarm systems, fire alarms, fire extinguishers are considered for additional discounts. Updating your roof and wiring is essential to prevent disasters. Make sure you change your washer and dryer hoses every three years.
