BLTs and Burgers at Summerville's Ye Ole Fashioned

By Christian Burney

Ye Ole Fashioned was founded by Rod Lapin in 1972 in West Ashley, SC. These days, Todd Lapin, Rod's son, continues the business by upholding his father's number one practice: giving the customers more than they expect.

Todd Lapin had always been interested in food. As soon as he could reach the countertop, he began scooping ice cream in his father's restaurant - the original Ye Ole Fashioned. "I grew up working at my Dad's store and then wanted to start my own business," Lapin said. "I opened my own Ye Ole Fashioned on Trolley Road in Summerville in 1990 when I was 24, then my second store on Main St in 1996."

Ye Ole Fashioned is primarily a family restaurant. Its number one customers are families, and the menu caters accordingly. That aside, Lapin says the menu has something for everyone. "Kids love us. We have a great lunch business that draws a lot of business people. On the weekends, we get a lot sports teams throughout the year."

So how exactly does Ye Ole Fashioned draw such a large crowd? Probably the portion sizes. "Something we've always been known for is a quality product, a friendly staff, and big portions." The restaurant's signature dish is its BLT, which comes served with a whopping 10 slices of bacon.

Some of the other most popular items are the chef salads, burgers, club sandwich, tuna, and foot-long chili dogs. "People also love our chicken tenders, wings and crinkle cut fries," adds Lapin. Another aspect of the menu that gets attention is the dessert. "Everyone enjoys our banana splits, sundaes, and shakes," says Lapin. "Our most popular flavors, other than French vanilla and chocolate, are chocolate chip cookie dough, pralines, amaretto cherry and Reese's peanut butter."

"Summerville is a great area that continues to grow with friendly people," says Lapin on what makes the town such a great place to run his business. Cooking and good food are Lapin's specialty, and he's managed to channel that passion into a fun, friendly establishment that continues to bring great eats to the community of Summerville.
