Brown Dog Deli: Reinventing the Traditional Deli

By Kelly Church

Native to Charleston, SC, Brent Petterson decided to open up Brown Dog Deli after looking for a change after his former restaurant Brent's on Broad closed. He and his business partner developed the idea for a fresh deli that didn't exist in Charleston yet. They redesigned their space to have an "eclectic" feel and reinvented the modern deli with Brown Dog Deli's menu of hot and cold sandwiches, and hot dogs.

"Our food is a delicious flavor meld for the adventurous diner and classic deli favorites for comfort," Petterson says. "We try to use local products and the freshest food available."

Petterson says one of the restaurant's most popular sandwiches is the Pig N' Fig with house-made pulled pork, fig-rosemary preserves, Granny Smith apples, Applewood-smoked bacon and cheddar cheese on a French baguette and pressed for a warm panini. The Apple "Butter" Jeans is another favorite sandwich with melted brie, Granny Smith apples, locally-made apple butter, fresh arugula, mesquite smoked turkey, honey ham and Applewood-smoked bacon on a French baguette and pressed.

There are also cold sandwiches, including a classic Italian Cold Cut with sopressata, pepperoni, salami, ham, provolone, lettuce tomato, onion and an herb oil and vinegar dressing. For those seeking lighter options, there are wraps on the menu as well. A more unique offering is Brent's Burger Wrap with all the toppings of a classic cheeseburger in a jalapeno cheddar wrap.

The hot dog menu has the basics ? traditional Chicago dogs, chili dogs and pastrami dogs ? in addition to a few Brown Dog Deli specialties. The Pawley's Pimento Dog is topped with house made pimento cheese, chopped onions and yellow mustard. The Backyard BBQ takes hungry customers back to summer with hickory smoked pulled pork, barbecue sauce and pickle relish in a bun. There is also a build-your-own hot dog option on the menu so guests can start with a plain dog and top it however they like.

Brown Dog Deli is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 8 p.m., and Sunday until 4 p.m. Online ordering is also accepted via their website
