5 Useful Painting Tips: An Interview with Sue Green of Carolina Paint & Repair

By Susan Green

Please tell us a tittle bit about your company and the services you offer.

Dave worked as a plumber and housing maintenance for the DOD in Maryland. when he retired, we moved down to South Carolina. Dave wanted to give our children the opportunity to have their own business, so we started Honey Do Repairs. That was over 10 years ago. Now that the children have grown and learned the trades necessary to continue the business Dave & I have decided to retire.

We have enjoyed helping owners over the years, from replacing old batteries in a smoke detector that a senior could not reach to doing complete renovations to condos at the beach. The only services we don't provide are carpet replacement, appliance repair, heating, & air conditioning.

DJ our oldest son has taken over the business under the name Carolina HDR Services/Honey Do Repairs. He & his wife, Angie have trained with us and are ready to take on all of a client's needs.

What's one of the most important things you can do to properly prep walls and trim before painting?

Wipe down dusty walls and wash if necessary. Fix holes. Know if old paint is enamel or oil based paint.

Can you briefly talk about the different looks you can get with a faux finish? how does the price compare with a regular finish?

We have done knock down texturing in a number of condos at the beach. This finish will hide imperfections in walls. Vertical and horizontal stripes can give a room length, height, elegance, or a focal point. While pricing is slightly higher, the effect can be dramatic.

Is ceiling and wail repair necessary in most cases? What are the basic steps involved?

If a ceiling has popcorn texture, it is often easier to remove the texture before painting. Wall repair is usually just slight spackling of nail holes.

What are some of the current interior painting trends for houses?

Stripes, stripes, stripes!!

Do you have any advice for choosing the right color for a particular room?

No. While we can offer advice, it is the customer who has to live with the color choice every day. We prefer the customer choose a color that they love, not something we suggested.
