Get the Facts About Flood Insurance: An Interview with Brian A. Payne of Field Insurance Agency

By Brian A. Payne

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a locally owned and operated independent insurance agency serving all of South Carolina and some of North Carolina. Since 1968 we have continued to offer peace of mind for our clients and have established relationships with a large network of companies. We are a large provider of home, auto, wind, flood and commercial insurance products in coastal areas.

Can you briefly talk about the main reasons why homeowners should consider getting flood insurance?

Flood is not covered under a homeowners insurance policy. Flood is very common in coastal areas during tropical storms and hurricanes but can also be prone to flooding during period of high rain fall or flooding tides. We recommend that everyone speak to their agent regarding flood coverage.

What is the basic range of options that you can be covered for with flood insurance?

Flood insurance traditionally covers water rising into a home or building from ground up. The coverage is based upon the value of the structures and the contents inside of the property.

How does making a claim due to a flood affect someone's overall insurance premium?

Traditionally filling a claim for weather related damages will not directly impact your premium. However, it should be understood that following major catastrophic damages carriers often increase rates across the board in areas that are effected. It is also very common that rates are increased in other areas that may pose the same risks. (For example, if you are in a hurricane prone area, you are likely to see some rate impact whether a storm directly hits your state or not.)

What is one of the biggest regrets you've seen homeowners have when it comes to insurance coverage for floods?

Year after year, hurricane after hurricane there are many consumers that do not have adequate insurance coverage. We strongly recommend clients in coastal counties to purchase flood insurance. The consequences of not having coverage outweigh the very affordable premiums.

What advice do you have for homeowners who live in a flood area but have a limited budget for insurance?

It is important for all consumers to be very responsible in regards to proper insurance. If on a budget, start with properly insuring your property as for most households it is their largest asset and should be of utmost concern. Budget for proper coverage and then work from there.
