How One Evening Led to a New Career and Uptown Art

By Elisha Neubauer

Looking for something unique to do one evening, Lisa Cheek, owner of Uptown Art, attended a 'paint and sip' class approximately eight years ago. She was hooked.

"Everyone in the class had such fun and their paintings were remarkable," Cheek said. Immediately falling in love with the concept, Cheek knew she wanted to open her own.

In 2009, that's exactly what she did.

Her first studio was launched in Greenville, South Carolina. She opened a secondary studio in Clemson just six years later. Cheek had found her niche and couldn't have been happier. When asked to describe the concept behind Uptown Art, Cheek referred to it as a 'social art experience.' Each session is approximately 2-3 hours long and is taught in a group setting.

"Our classes are held in a group setting so our team not only teaches them to paint but also entertains them," Cheek said. "There's music, laughter, games, and most of all, FUN," Cheek said. "Our customers come to Uptown Art to relax, socialize and celebrate!"

The process is unique, with each guest being given a blank canvas. As the class progresses the talented artists on staff guide guests through the process, helping them to create their very own masterpiece.

Aside from social outings, the unique studio has hosted many varied events. The concept makes it a great place to host a party, including birthdays of any age, bachelorette parties, and baby showers. Other events Uptown Art has hosted include school and summer field trips and corporate team building meetings. Everything is customizable when booking a party, including choosing a party date, the guest list, and selecting the painting from Uptown Art's database of incredible artwork for guests to enjoy creating during the party.

With so many years in the business, Cheek has clearly gotten a handle on what paintings are customer favorites. Her biggest hit, as she told us, is the Tiger Eye, thanks in part to her Clemson location.

"We sell this class out every time it is on the calendar," she said. "Of course it was most popular during football season. We love our Tigers!" Other favorites include the Romance series, originally painted by professional artist, Karen Tarlton. The series includes such titles as The Winter Romance, Evening Romance, Spring Romance, Autumn Romance, and Christmas Romance. While Tarlton's artwork seems to be a fan favorite, Uptown Art does currently license work from over 15 professional artists, ensuring there is something for everyone's taste.
