Elizabeth Williams, Owner of the Illumina Spa in Suumerville, SC, has an affinity for the art of healing. She has worked as a massage therapist in medical and spa settings since 1993. Even so, opening Illumina in October of 2008, in difficult economic times, was an act of faith. Williams wanted to create a unique space where clients could feel nurtured. Nine years later, Illumina is still going strong.
"Warm tones, music, and aromatherapy greet you as you walk in the spa," Williams said. "The energy is friendly, caring and kind. We want everyone who walks through the door feel accepted, relaxed and empowered in their wellness from the time they walk through the door until time they leave."
Spa and skin care treatments are intended to soothe the senses and to help people feel comfortable. Illumina offerings include massage, skin care and aromatherapy. A favorite offering is the Thai yoga massage.
"It is a private customized yoga lesson that ends with a Thai massage we also play Listening to Smile sonic meditation music for the client that wants to dive in deeper to their treatment using sound healing," Williams said.
Another popular program is Ecstatic Dance, which provides a safe, non-judgmental space where people can move however the music moves them. The program meets twice a month at different locations. Coastal Coffee Dancers offers a larger space for wild and free dancers. The Spa is a little smaller and has a more private environment.
Williams takes her goal of helping people feel more comfortable in their skin quite literally and the spa offers skin care services like microdermabrasion, peels and treatments for acne and aging skin. Aromatherapy helps clients find the right fragrances to enhance the treatments and uplift body, mind and spirit.
The therapists who work at Illumina are highly qualified and Williams herself is a licensed esthetician. Ilumina Spa recently changed its name to Illumina Skincare and Bodywork to reflect the greater range of services and programs now available. It also offers a post-graduate apprenticeship program for therapists who have graduated from massage school.
"We want you to be free and happy within yourself," Williams said. "We were born to shine, but life sometimes wears us down and we forget who we are. Illumina is here to serve Summerville residents by offering the highest quality massage and bodywork, skincare, yoga, dance, art and sonic meditation."
