Interior Design that Fits Your Lifestyle and Personality: An Interview with Debbie Jordan of Debbie Jordan Interiors

By Debbie Jordan

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Debbie Jordan Interiors is a full service Interior Design Firm specializing in Residential Homes, Commercial Contract furnishings w/Turnkey Packages for the Hospitality Industry, as well as Health Care Facilities, Offices, Lobbies, Restaurants, Clubhouses, "Man Caves", Outdoor Patio and Pool Furniture, etc. Our motto is "No Job is Too Large or Too Small." We turn nothing down when it comes to our clients. What differentiates our firm from most Interior Design firms, is that we are Contract Designers purchasing "bulk" when we furnish resorts, etc. This allows us to get "Dealer Special pricing" by purchasing wholesale direct from major manufacturers saving our residential clients money to meet their budget, or enable them to add a feature they really wanted, but wasn't in the original budget plan. Our firm travels to all sorts of destinations. We have furnished and did renovations up and down the east coast, the NC mountains, Wisconsin, Atlanta, and as far as Aruba and the Cayman Islands. Whether building a new home, renovating, furnishing an existing home, or even a single room, we offer an array of services from start to finish to help assist you in the process, as it can become extremely overwhelming. We strive to make you entire design process cost efficient, stress-free, fun, and most importantly enjoyable for you.

Can you briefly talk about the importance of matching the way your home is decorated with your lifestyle and personality?

Matching your home to your lifestyle and personality is extremely important. It's a reflection of you, your family, your quality of life, and interests of things you enjoy most. Whether it be sports, baking, collecting treasures, traveling, hunting, fishing, sailing, or whatever captures your interest. Everyone has different personalities and lifestyles, and it often shows, especially in your home. You want to incorporate a feel or mood that expresses you.

What's the first step you would take to create this type of interior design?

I would make an appointment to visit their home to get a feel for their home and how it is decorated now. As I mentioned above about the importance of decorating your home to suit your lifestyle and personality is a reflection of ones interest. I would spend a great deal of time with the client by getting to know him/her by asking questions about their likes and dislikes, find out about there background, their hobbies, favorite pieces of art or furniture that may be an heirloom they treasure, if they like to entertain friends and family, how many live in the home, and basically fully realize their taste to accomplish their needs. I feel that your personality is your trademark, so that would be my goal to start with.

What are the most important aspects of personality and lifestyle that should be factored into interior design?

Comfort first, but fully realize your tastes and personality whether your style is traditional, sophisticated European, casual cottage, or a mountain rustic motif. We strive to create an expression of your life.

Is there anything that people don't normally consider when it comes to redecorating their house that they should consider?

Absolutely. There are multiple considerations to factor in such as budget, patience, understand some items have to be ordered, and that can sometime take longer than we want, especially custom drapes, blinds, bedspreads and those type of things. They need to consider the best time to start the project that would be best suited with their schedule, realizing the time it could take for completion. Realizing that depending on the scope of work needed, being able to adapt to construction going on in their home while staying in it while work is being done, or if it is a major refurbishment whereas the client may have to move out while the construction is being performed, they would have to factor that in as to where they will need to relocate temporarily. Normally, this isn't the case. We do our best by accommodating our clients needs by getting the job done quickly, as we too know the inconvenience it is when you feel your home is in disarray. Our job is to keep everything protected, clean, and functional during the process.

What advice do you have for a household where the members have personalities and lifestyles that aren't necessarily the same?

In my experience, I find that in every household. My advice to that question would be to try to compromise. Sometimes you have to give a little and take a little. I personally think it is important to focus on everyone's ideas. Include them somewhere by displaying something that is important to them. It could be something that is very meaningful to them and want to shown or displayed. That is where it can easily be incorporated in the family room perhaps by grouping it with something else that would work. It could be your spouses favorite old chair, that you absolutely despise and want to rid of it. You could perhaps reupholster it, add a scarf/throw on it or a throw pillow to incorporate your colors to flow. I feel that regardless of small things, those can be worked out, but when it comes to your home and personalities always try and make every room flow, by trying to use the same color scheme throughout This can easily be done by simple suggestions from your Designer.
