Protecting Your Family from Pests: An Interview with Home Pest Control

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Home Pest Control Company has been in business for over 52 years in the Midlands of South Carolina and now over 2 years in the Low country of South Carolina. We offer Termite Treatments and Lifetime Warranties, Pest and Mosquito Control, TAP Insulation and Moisture Remediation.

How did you get into this line of work?

I came on board with Home Pest Control in November 2003 as a college runner. I would do anything from file papers and documents to clean restrooms and even help some of our repairmen load and unload trucks. Once I graduated from USC, Home Pest Control kept me on full time running a pest control route and doing termite work.

How do you know if you simply have a few spiders and ants around the house or your bug issue is a real problem?

The main indicator is frequency of activity. Seeing one or two pests within a month's time is common in the South, but more than that you can consider there might be an infestation. Also remember if you let the one or two go without action, you could have a problem soon.

What advice can you give to prevent pests from entering the home?

Mechanical measures and source reduction are the best defense to prevent entry before chemical control. Sanitation, reducing water and moisture and removing clutter and excessive stored items are all good ideas. Also, make sure your doors and windows are tightly sealed.

What should homeowners be looking for in a qualified pest control company?

Look for someone that is properly licensed and insured, professional and up to date with training and certifications.

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies? Is there anything you believe you do better/different?

At Home Pest Control we pride ourselves on protecting your family, health and home. It is always important to be on time or to notify the customer if we are running a little behind. We also try to exceed the customer's expectations every time we perform service.

Once the new homeowner moves in, are there any precautions they should take relating to pest control within the first couple weeks?

All homes are different but pest problems usually do not happen overnight. Especially if a home has been vacant or sat on the market for a while, it may take more than one treatment to control a heavy infestation of any pests. If the new home was not vacant and the previous homeowner had ongoing pest services with a company, you should not have any immediate concerns.

What are the most difficult kinds of projects?

Bed Bugs are very tedious. This type of project is very time consuming and detail oriented. One word of caution to everyone is to never go with a company that gives a firm cost of treatment over the phone before they look at the extent of the infestation.

What are your favorite projects to work on?

Ant jobs are can be interesting. You have to identify the ant species first, and then determine the treatment method. Whatever type of species, you always have to find the nest in order to be successful in your treatment.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you?
