Roofing Services with No Down Payment: An Interview with Lanier Roofing

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Lanier Roofing is a full service residential and light commercial roofing company that specializes in assisting homeowners with wind and hail damage. We work with homeowners insurance policies to ensure work is done in accordance with insurance requirements.

How did you get into this line of work? How long have you been in the roofing business?

I have been in the construction industry since 2002. I started building houses after graduating from college. During the real estate bust of 2008, I went to work for a residential roofing company that concentrated on insurance roof claims. I then obtained an insurance adjuster's license and got certified with HAAG engineering as a residential roof inspector. In 2011, I formed Lanier Roofing and Restoration.

This is a pretty basic question, but in your opinion, why should people care about their roof?

The roof is one of the most important aspects of a house. A roof that is in poor condition, will allow water into the house that can damage the interior of the home as well as result in mold growth inside the home. In addition to the protection aspect of the roof, a roof contributes to the overall look of the home.

What are some key qualities a homeowner should look for in a good roofing company?

A customer should really do their homework before choosing a roofing contractor. They need to verify the company through sources such as the Better Business Bureau and Angie's List. Once they have verified that the company is legitimate, they need to select a company that does not require any money to be paid before the work begins. This is where most people get taken advantage of; they pay money up front and never hear from the company again.

Are there any easy-to-see signs that your roof needs work? What dangers can result in a damaged roof?

The easiest sign is visible water spots on the interior of the home. This water can be coming from an area that may not be visible from the ground. The other obvious signs are missing shingles or finding shingles in the yard. Again, the dangers of the damaged roof can be mold growth inside the home, damaged sheetrock or rotted decking and rafters.

Do the homeowners have to leave the house during the restoration process?

Most of the residential jobs that we do can be done in one or two days. The homeowner can choose to be there or not. All of our work is supervised by a project manager to make sure everything possible is done to protect the home and yard during the project.

Do you only offer necessary roof restoration from storms through insurance companies? Or can a regular customer come to you for work based on aesthetic beauty?

We specialize in the insurance work, but welcome any type of roofing work. We offer services that include repair, new construction, non-insurance re-roofs and roofing additions to the home.

What's sets yours business apart from all the others? Is there anything you feel you do better/different?

The main difference in our business than other roofing companies is that we do not require any money to be paid before the job is complete. We want the customer to be satisfied with the job before they pay us. We also pride ourselves on customer service. When you call our office, the office manager will answer the phone and assist you in any way she can. Many "fly by night" roofing companies are operating out of their pickup trucks and all calls go to their cell phones that they may or may not answer.

What are some new and innovative materials that have been introduced for roofing/siding in the past few years? Have you received positive reviews from these new materials?

There are new products and innovations that come out monthly. The one change that we have seen in the industry that affects every customer is the manufacturer's warranty extension that all major manufacturers adopted last year. They took what was a traditional 30 year warranty and increased it to a 50 year warranty.

What are your most difficult types of projects?

Our most difficult but also most rewarding projects are the apartment complexes that we have re-roofed this year. Apartment complexes come with their own set of challenges because of the number of residences that live there. We really work hard to make sure that the residents don't have to alter their way of life while we re-roof the buildings.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you?

Our office is open from 8:30 to 5:00 Monday through Friday and the number is 864-373-9799. Or you can contact us through our website at
