Take a Peak Into a Sweet Tooth's Dream in Charleston

By Marina I. Jokic

Ten years ago, Cobb had recently moved back to Charleston after a year of living in New York City. She returned with the intention of opening her own bakery, and with the help of her father, transformed a small retail space into one of the most inviting and warm bakeries in town.

"I decided I wanted to open a cupcake bakery after frequenting the popular Magnolia Bakery and standing in line for their cupcakes. I loved the idea of cupcakes," Cobb shares. "Make Life Sweet" and "Delivering Happiness," the business' mottoes epitomize their mission and goals. Because she saw the opportunity to enter a mostly new market in the state with a specialty product, she took it readily and never looked back. "No one was doing them in Charleston and they were so nostalgic to me," she exclaims. Cupcake DownSouth stepped it up a notch by introducing gourmet flavors and high-quality natural ingredients.

Cupcakes are the perfect size treat. Cobb distinguishes herself by taking great care to create original flavors and use only natural ingredients. Her hand-crafted cupcakes have been a hit in the city. Located on the popular King Street, Cupcake DownSouth is small and cozy with a retro feel. Cobb even painted her old Volvo wagon pink and had her dad craft a giant cupcake to go on top. She would drive around town, dropping off samples to people to announce their opening. It has been a great adventure for Cobb, and she loves running every aspect of the business.

Needless to say, kids are some of the most frequent clients at the bakery, eagerly awaiting to sample any new flavors. Cobb sees the process of creating cupcakes and thinking of new flavors and looks as an artistic venture designed to make people's day a little sweeter. One of the most popular flavors is Southern Red Velvet. "We probably sell twice as many of those as any other flavor. It is a rich red velvet cake topped with our signature cream cheese icing. It is simple and absolutely delicious," Cobb points out. They bake their cupcakes fresh every day and donate the leftovers at the end of each day.

Customers enjoy a fresh batch of cupcakes every day. Cobb shares that her personal favorite flavor changes quite frequently; she loves the Pumpkin, which is her aunt's recipe, and also the Chocolate Monkey with its walnuts and chocolate chip crunch alongside the fresh and creamy banana peanut butter icing with white chocolate chips and nuts inside. The Salted Caramel Chocolate and the Blackberry Mojito are hits as well. The Blackberry Mojito in particular is made with Firefly Blackberry moonshine and is part of their "After Dark" alcohol-infused cupcake line.

Luckily, the bakery also offers customer orders for parties and weddings at all times of the year.

They have also started selling royal icing cookies and preparing custom cookie orders. In that way, they can match the cupcakes or cookies or cake pops to a particular party theme or color. It's one way that the bakery builds relationships with the local community.
