The Benefits of Professional Landscape Maintenance: An Interview with Joseph Hopkins of Coastal Lawn Care

By Joseph Hopkins

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

My roots in the industry start at the golf course. I have an Associates Degree in Turf Management and worked in golf course maintenance for 3 years before moving into the lawn care and landscaping side. I have been in business for about 4 years. We specialize in fertilizer and pest control programs in the lawn but are equipped to handle all aspects of the lawn and landscaping industry.

What are a few areas of one's yard that require frequent maintenance? How often should these areas be serviced?

Your basic maintenance should include mowing, edging, and trimming. These things should be done weekly during the growing season. Going longer than a week without mowing is not healthy for the grass, as you should only remove 1/3rd of the leaf blade at one time. Fertilizing should be done 2-6 times per year depending on type of grass. Weed control is a necessity in any landscape both in the lawn and bed areas. Pre-emergent herbicides should be applied twice per year during the spring and fall and post-emergent as needed.

In short, what are some benefits associated with keeping a well maintained lawn? What about if you are looking to sell your home?

A well maintained lawn and landscape can add beauty to any home. Regular maintenance is the key. If you were to suddenly decide to sell your home you don't want to spend the money it would take to get a neglected lawn and landscape back into shape.

What are some lawn maintenance services that professionals have the ability to handle where homeowners may not?

It's very important for homeowners to educate themselves on the laws concerning chemical and fertilizer applications. Improper use pollutes the environment and kills beneficial plants and insects. It's important when choosing a lawn care professional that you make sure the company is licensed, insured, and experienced with the type of lawn and plants that you have or plan to install. I find a lot of homeowners that overlook the importance of this and wind up with an healthy lawn and a bunch of dead or struggling plants.

In your opinion, what are the biggest benefits of hiring a professional versus trying to do it yourself?

As stated above, going with an experienced, licensed professional is usually a better option when choosing to apply chemicals to your lawn. Get estimates. Most companies give free quotes. A lot of times you can actually save money going with a company instead of doing it yourself because of the equipment involved that can be very expensive to rent or buy.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you and your company?

The best way to get in contact with us and find out what we can do for you is a direct call or text to my personal phone, 843-213-9154. If I don't answer I call back ASAP and will have you a complete estimate ASAP.
