The Best of Both Worlds at The Market Common

By S. Mathur

Combining the excitement and convenience of city life with the tranquil atmosphere of the village, The Market Common creates a new kind of living experience. Bringing together shopping, entertainment, and living spaces in proximity to each other and to the beach, it has already become a favorite destination for families, visitors, art lovers, and theater goers. The inspiration behind such multi-use communities is the idea of the new urbanism, which seeks to restore "the lost art of place-making." In practical terms, that means the creation of sustainable, walkable neighborhoods.

"The Market Common offers urban lifestyle at its best with shopping, dining and entertainment all in one beautiful location," says Marketing Coordinator Katherine Taylor. "The Market Common delivers an ambiance of tree-lined avenues perfect for an enjoyable walk, as well as rocking chairs if you prefer to sit and relax while enjoying music throughout the property. There is no other collective shopping and entertainment district in Myrtle Beach that compares in quality of experience."

For dedicated shoppers, there are high-end national retailers like Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Chico's, and Anthropologie and one-of-a-kind boutiques like Francesca's, HandPicked, and Random. While shopping can be serious business, there's a lot more going on. There are art galleries and studios, a dance studio for children, movies, street festivals, investing seminars, and more. The dining choices include Chinese, Mexican, Italian, American, and Japanese and cater to all tastes, from gourmet meals in an elegant patio to pizza and ice cream with the kids.

Taylor sets the scene: "Stroll the pristine streets and enjoy landscaped greenery and relaxing music. Wander into an art gallery, take in a movie, or see a play. From complimentary carriage rides to movies under the stars, we have events all year round. Take a horse drawn carriage through the streets of The Market Common, or bring the family for a movie under the stars each Friday in the park. Our free Concerts on the Green concert series packs in the fun with large regionally known bands and the best brews on the beach."

Residential options include both rental and ownership units, ranging from compact studios to three- and four-story townhouses built in the local traditional style. With a year-round calendar of events including a weekly farmers' market, arts and crafts festivals, a triathlon, a Humane Society walk, and Halloween and Christmas celebrations, there are plenty of opportunities for community participation. The largest event of the year, says Taylor, is their New Year's Eve event called "A Southern Time's Square" bringing in an astounding 7,000 people last year. "Complete with a ball drop, fireworks, 2 stages, a beer garden, street entertainment, and food vendors you'll be ringing in the New Year with a bang!"
